Using juxtaposing environments IN OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE BUILDING to subconsciously provoke thought & OPINION.
2020 SEVERE STORMS & FLOODINGS
global problem / personal impact
Audios of thunder and rain play throughout the space and echo throughout the vaulted ceilings, causing discomfort and an unpleasant environment for users. Wind machines would rustle the leaves of tall, high-reaching plants, and strobe lights would flash intermittently to emulate a storm. This space is designed to expose the users to the negative environment, that is so powerful when it is experienced then alongside a positive one.

The opposite, positive environment in the other half of the building is very calm and tranquil. I wanted the space to show users what life could be without the tragedy of global warming - I wanted this space to show them what could be if they were to make conscious changes to their behaviour to reduce their personal carbon foot print. 340 flowering shrubs surround the walk ways, in line with the recent actions detailed in ‘About Winchester’ where 340 trees were planted to reduce carbon emissions. The shrub's life spans would be dependant upon the users visiting the space, since the CO2 naturally provided from humans would enable the plants to thrive. This is intended to experientially explain to users their incredible personal impact upon the life of our planet. Smooth, cool, white stone benches sit in the nooks of the archways, encouraging users to sit and relax amongst the water, plants and natural light.

The basement floor plan is a flooded space, with a slatted wooden walk way allowing users to move freely through the space. One side of the building is dark, and uses strobe lighting and audio’s to emulate a thunderstorm and reveal the flooded space in intermittent flashes. Tall grasses float in the water, rustling in the cold [artificial] wind that blows through the space. This installation is designed to be distressing, and is extremely effective in expressing its undesirability and ideals, when experienced in conjunction with the installation in the opposite half of the building.
The installation in the opposite half of the building is a bright, naturally lit one, with the sunlight casting reflected ripples around the room which fall onto the original Norman stone walls. In the water floats an abundance of flowering shrubs, and cool, white stone benches are tucked into the archways of the space, encouraging users to relax in the calm tranquillity.
CORONAVIRUS
government advice / the media's response
‘Wash you hands for 2 minutes’ - I took the only physical government and NHS approved advice out at the time. I used the idea of creating a beautiful space for people to complete this action within, aiming to encourage the advice

Chinese communities in UK abused over outbreak - I wanted to use sensory techniques here, experimenting with the idea of audio of shouting voices, spot lighting to cause feelings of self consciousness, fog and colour to increase stressful environment.

‘Panic buying’ - I explored the idea of user-led design, looking at communication and decision making between users ‘Heard immunity’ - I explored again the concept of communication and user-led design, as well as natural elements to provide tangibility

Death toll rises daily - I explored aspects of sound (or lack of) using falling feathers to represent tha fallen, to impact realism upon users. The idea of projection of death toll numbers is also used to remain current and impactful.

Heard immunity: Users are greeted with three separate corridoors, eavh one with a sprinkler overhad. One out of the three sprinklers would be randomly activated via motion sensors, so that one user is dusted with water vapour, and the other two are allowed to move safely through the space staying dry.

This shows the ground floor plan, and the arrangement of pod spaces I designed based upon the current headline news of Coronavirus. The left hand side of the building expresses the official government advice given out on the crisis, and the right hand side of the building expresses the correspondence to Coronavirus on social media. 2020 IMMIGRATION POLICY
right wing take / left wing take
Figures explode myth that Britain is a xenophobic island - Artificial lighting and wording project onto the floor in a venn diagram style. In middle, ‘Human’ is projected, and around the edge the top 10 most common EU nationalities in Winchester. Users are challenged to understand and eventually communicate with one another and share the experience, when they innevitably end up in circle facing one another.

Young migrants might be allowed to enter into UK without a job offer - A small, child-sized opening is cut out in the pod structure, opening out into a ball pit area. This installation specifically encourages young children to engage with the news.

Weaning country off low skilled immigration will change country for better - user sees natural light shining through thick tangle of leaves as they enter. Small suggestive gaps in the leaves allow human nature to take hold and users will try and find their way through to the naturally lit area away from the dark. The vegetation represents the environment that fruit and vegetable pickers would be surrounded by - a job listed as 'low skilled' in the article the installation refers to.

Britain to close door to non-English speakers and low skilled workers - A user-led experience: users must repeat a ‘quintessentially British’ phrase to open a voice-recognition operated door. This allows them to move through to the next pod, the elite bar. This installation challenges user decisions, dealing with emotions associated with failure and persistence.

New immigration policies are elitist and selfish - An elite, high-class, small temporary bar area, only accessible via the previous pod that uses a voice recognition-operated door. This installation encourages feelings of privaledge, and a variety of different emotions that could have risen through their journey to arrive there.

Immigration policy will mean care sector ‘black hole’ claims union - A spatial installation comprising a narrowing black tunnel challenging user’s senses as they crawl in and feel the enclosing space.

This shows the first floor plan, and the arrangement of pod spaces I designed based upon the current parliamentary news stories on the 2020 immigration policy. THE BUILDING FUNCTIONING AS A DYNAMIC TEMPORARY SPACE:
THE CORONAVIRUS TAKE OVER
‘Self Isolating’ - a safe space into which users could enter into on the two opposite sides of the building, and meet on either side of a thick glass pane. People would be able to press their hands up against the pane safely, to make near human contact.

‘Lockdown’ - A locked pod with a view out of the South elevation of the building, providing view to the street below and Cathedral beyond.

‘Social Distancing’ - The living wall allows users to plant a plant of their choice from a small selection. Seeing that others had been and planted something and the prospect of new life would bring a sense of community back into peoples lives.

In order to show how my design could function in its intended temporary way, I have reformulated the pods and changed their contents, to show how the space can be completely and easily changed according to the current affairs in the news at any given time. In order to show this, I reconfigured the space and redesigned the installations in line with the very relevant fact that Coronavirus has taken over all our headlines, as well as our lives.
I designed the new Coronavirus broadcast to take over both the ground and first floor this time, since Coronavirus really has taken over all aspects of the news. I designed installations that were less about teaching and broadcasting, since we are all very much aware of the situation as we live through it each day. These installations are more providing memorable experiences for people to hold onto and still incur during the lock down.
I re designed the floor plans with very few pods in them, in order to adhere to the 2 meter rule so that users could still come in and use the public library space at this difficult time. Click the individual installations for more details and to find out the message behind each one.
